“Zombie Prom” was the premiere event from Unreliable Narrator Productions for Halloween 2009 1987. Guests were introduced to the elaborate back story via an informational packet which was distributed 1 month prior to the event. The packet was designed to resemble a high school student’s folder, and included a report detailing the concept, a class schedule, dress code guidelines, and a formal Prom invitation. A viral marketing campaign was also launched, and guests were invited to interact with the character of Trisha Townshend via Twitter.
Upon arrival, guests were directed to pose for photographs under an archway which was equal parts Prom glitz and human remains. They then ventured inside to explore the various rooms which included a dance floor draped in sparkling black and green fabric, cobwebbed lanterns, and ghoulish green lights. The centerpiece of the dance floor was an authentic 19th Century casket which emanated mist and a menacing glow. Every space accessible to guests was thoroughly themed, including the restroom which was splattered with blood and wallpapered with vintage yearbook pages. Additional areas included a school hallway complete with banners, bulletin boards, lockers, and a trophy case.
Voting for Prom Queen and King took place throughout the evening, with the coronation taking place at midnight. The King and Queen were presented with crowns, custom made sashes, and a living dead bouquet. Jefferson Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” provided the soundtrack to their inaugural dance as fellow Prombies joined in and continued to dance the night away.
